All Around Canada – Contest Voting has Started!

northcotts-picture-2

All Around Canada – that is the name I gave our store’s  #Northcott Trans-Canada Block Party block.  When designing the block, I wanted the geese flying over the entire Canada map, to show the inclusiveness of our country and our pride.

Sharon H. took my concept and with her fabulous drawing and computer skills made it come to life.  We tweaked, we culled, and by December we had it finished.  So off it went to Northcott to be entered into their shop challenge.

How incredibly excited we are that our block made it into the top ten finalists!  We couldn’t be more pumped if we were in the Miss America Pageant!  There are some beautiful blocks besides our own, and we are so proud to be included with them.

I ask that everyone please take the time to vote for your favourite block by clicking here Voting is limited to one per IP address.  Travel to a new place with a different network, then you can vote again.  We also have a link to the voting platform on the first slide on the Home page of our website.

Voting ends February 28 at 11:39 EST.

These blocks are designed by stores who are participating in the #Northcott Trans-Canada Block Party, and they are giving the patterns away for free to walk-in customers until September 1st.  Kits are also available for purchase.

After September 1st, stores may sell the patterns and kits by mail.

In October, I blogged about all the various challenge components of the #Northcott Trans-Canada Block Party, as well as other contests that were announced at the time.  Click here to read this blog post and get all the details.

And thank you for voting – the best competition is one with lots of votes!

Of course, feel free to share this with your quilting buddies, friends, and guild members.  You know how quilters love to hear about new programs.  🙂

From Immortal to Shangri-La

Immortal Quilt Kit

Immortal Quilt Kit

When I ordered the fabric to make the Immortal quilt shown above, I had to go by the kitting requirements issued by the manufacturer for quantity.  The pattern wasn’t yet available to proof, so this was all stores had to rely on to know how much fabric to purchase.  Well, it wasn’t until we received the book and I read through the instructions that I found the kitting requirements had been double the amount needed for the border print.  So what to do with the extra 4 bolts we now owned?

Kim and I brainstormed one evening and Kim suggested taking 2 repeats of the print, mirror imaging them, and cutting the ends at an angle.  It was brilliant, and a pattern and new table runner kit was born.  Kim sewed the seam, and I quilted and bound it.  Named after the fabric line, the Shangri-La Table Runner is one of our newest kits.

Shangri-La-Table-Runner-3

  • Table Runner finishes at approximately 15″ x 47″.
  • Kit includes the pattern, fabric for the top, binding, and backing.  You provide the thread and batting.
  • $24.99.

Festival of Quilts – Time to Submit Entries, Buy Dinner Tickets, and Enjoy Last Year’s Photos

In case you aren’t aware, the brochure for the Festival of Quilts held on May 28 and 29 at Heritage Park is now available online and at our store. The entry deadline for displaying your quilts (this is not a competition, simply a fabulous display throughout the park) is April 1, 2016.  So now is the time to fill out your entry form and finish those quilts up.  Remember, without people’s participation, there is no show.

Along Came Quilting is the proud sponsor of the Saturday night dinner and entertainment at the Wainwright hotel. Following a scrumptious meal prepared by the chefs at the park, Catherine Redford will delight us with her entertaining look at “Lessons Learned While Quilting”.  Please call the park at 403-268-8500 to purchase these tickets.  Early bird pricing ends this Friday.

Last year I met up with friends at the park on the Sunday afternoon of the Festival. It was so nice to reconnect and enjoy the quilts everyone so graciously put in for display.  My friends are fabulous photographers, and I am blown away by the pictures my friend Linda Braun took of Heritage Park and the quilts.  You may also enjoy them by viewing them here.

I’ll finish off with a couple of photos of Shelley Bennett’s Common Bride quilt displayed at the Nellie McClung house at Heritage Park last year. Shelley made this quilt in Kim’s class over the course of a year.  It was obvious the volunteers matched the quilt to the room; the lilac walls picked up the lilac colours sprinkled throughout the quilt top.  Photos are courtesy and copyright of Linda Braun.  Common Bride is a pattern by Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts.  Longarm quilting by Irene Campbell.

“Vintage eyes require a little extra help every now and then – especially in cases of reverse stitching. I LOVE the magnifying seam ripper with the built-in LED light to assist you even more in your stitch-reversal endeavors.  Not only does it magnify your stitches for removal, but it also adds extra light to help see.”

“My favorite item for the holiday season has to be the Grinch Advent Calendar.  I am a HUGE Grinch fan!  “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” has been my favorite Christmas program, which I have watched every year since I was a kid.  And now my kids are watching it as well.  So it was a given that I should make the store sample, and will be making one for each of my kids.  The Grinch is for kids of ALL ages!”

June got Busy

June K. is a subscriber to our batik/bali Fabric Lover’s Club and assured me when she signed up that she would make use of the monthly fabric packages.  Well, she remained true to her word, and sent me a couple of pictures where she has incorporated pieces from the club.  (Click on the pictures for a larger, crisper image.)

The bottom picture shows a photo of her brother’s property and the landscape she has made from it.  June was a student in Roxanne Nelson’s Pictorial Quilting class and obviously enjoys the process.  Great job June and thank you for the photos!

Now while I’ve heard of other projects that participants have made using Fabric Lovers Club, I haven’t seen them.  So if you have some to show me, please send me a picture or bring them in to the store.
